Do I need to see a therapist or can I help myself?

Ever since I was about 10 I have picked at scabs and scarred different areas of my body. I didn’t do it for fun, it was just a habit and I could not stop. I went through phases where I didn’t pick at my skin and then it seemed to get worse again. I began picking at a scab on my scalp in middle school and have been doing it ever since. Now I’m in high school and I always pull my hair back because I’m ashamed of the scabs. But no matter how hard I try to stop, I can’t. I tell myself NO PICKING TODAY! and it doesn’t work.
and you know what i’ve come to realize, I do this when I’m stressed or nervous. I’ll stop picking for the whole day and then something stressful will happen before bed and I get back into the habit.
My mom just thinks it’s like biting nails. but I think it’s more than just a stupid habit. I think it’s psychological. I was a very nervous child, always worrying about everything and picking at my skin was sort of a relief.
This all probably sounds horrible, but I really think I need help. I’m tired of wearing my hair up because of this battle with myself.
Is this a disorder and what should I do if it is?
